Airstream Adventures
Wild Horses and Wyoming’s White Mountain Road
It's parking day here at the International Airstream Rally in Rock Springs and… we already parked yesterday. That means a free day for exploring. We plotted out a route on minimally maintained dirt roads to the west of Rock Springs. White Mountain and wild horses were ahead of us. As our tires crunched along the gravel road, the towering Wyoming mountains and sprawling high desert landscapes came into view. We ventured onto the White Mountain Road, a stretch of backcountry path between Rock Springs and Green River in Wyoming. Our destination: a haven where Wyoming's wild horses roam free, their silhouettes captured against the sun-bleached expanse of the Western landscape.
From Casper, Wyoming to Rock Springs, Wyoming: the end of our Oregon Trail Journey to The 2023 International Airstream Rally.
Leaving behind the charming city of Casper, with its rich history and scenic surroundings, the final day of our journey of exploration and adventure awaited us. Our destination: the much-anticipated 2023 International Airstream Rally in Rock Springs, Wyoming. But as seasoned travelers, we knew the destination was just half the fun. The real joy was in the journey, dotted with pit-stops that held tales of the olden days, trails blazed by pioneers, and the rugged beauty of Wyoming.
Scotts Bluff Nebraska to Casper Wyoming; Memories in Stone
After a good nights sleep in Scotts Bluff Nebraska, we headed to Casper Wyoming today, retracing the trails of pioneers and soldiers of old. Two main stops today, Fort Laramie, Wyoming and Guernsey, Wyoming. Both of these locations are filled with history and demonstrate what life was like traveling west nearly 200 years ago.
North Platte Nebraska to Scottsbluff Nebraska; Landmarks and a little Drama.
The travel has inherent unpredictability. Adventures rarely occur in the comfort of familiarity; instead, they are born in the realm of the unknown. And that is precisely where we found ourselves this day, leaving North Platte, Nebraska, in our trusty Airstream, bound for Scotts Bluff National Monument, retracing the steps of the Oregon Trail pioneers.
Hitchin' Our Silver Wagon: An Airstream Journey on the Oregon Trail
Our Oregon Trail adventure really began today in Marysville, Kansas, with our aluminum Airstream in tow. Now, you may be thinking, "Isn't an Airstream a far cry from the covered wagons the pioneers used?" And you would be right! But there's a touch of poetic justice in retracing the steps of those brave souls with my trusty, albeit slightly shinier, wagon.
From Hannibal, MO to Marysville, KS — Pony Express, Jesse James and the Donner party
Heading to the start of the Oregon Trail, we also see the beginning of the Pony Express and the End of Jesse James.
To Rock Springs on the Oregon Trail
The 2023 Airstream International Rally is in Rock Springs Wyoming this year. We will be traveling out there mostly following the Oregon trail. The first 700 miles will be interstate highways to Saint Joseph Missouri. From there, it’s all two-lane roads the next 1,000 miles to Rock Springs.
Working from my Airstream
Those who know me have heard my tales from the road.
In May of 2018, Velina and I sold the home we raised our 4 children in and traveled full-time in our Airstream trailer until August of 2019. To share in the care of my 97 year mother, we bought a condo in Hamilton Ohio after 16 months of living an adventure on the road. We now try to spend half our time in the Airstream.
